Port Stephens Power AFL Club's under-11 youth girls were all smiles following their season opening win against Terrigal Avoca on Sunday.
After not winning a single game during the 2020 season, the team's supporters stated that they could not be more proud of the side after winning the first game of the 2021 season at Ferodale Oval, Medowie.
The final score was 5.6.36 to 1.2.8.
The Ashpole Trio, Hayley, Caitlyn and Ruby, were the goal kickers for the game. Best on field for the team was Ruby 'Rocket' Ashpole who was always in the thick of it, got some great tackles in and was constantly finding space in order to get the ball.
The whole team did an exceptional job, they fought hard and really put their training into good use for the game.
Under-13 youth girls
A strong start to the season for the newly formed joint venture with Cardiff Hawks.
For a team that had only trained together once prior to round one, what we saw was an excellent blend of both Port Stephens Power and Cardiff Hawks with all the girls bonding well and working well together as a team, like they had been playing with each other for much longer. With more players than needed, the girls were more than happy rotating through the bench.
The first quarter was tight with neither side scoring points but a good hard battle fought out in the midfield with some good defensive efforts. In the second quarter, the Power Hawks really got going, getting points on the board early with six goals and two behinds. Third quarter, home side continued the momentum we built in the second with another four goals and six behinds scored. Fourth quarter, the Power Hawks benched players do some interchanging with Warners Bay to encourage them a bit and get some points on the board.
The final score was Power Hawks 11.8.74 to Warners Bay 0.1.1
Under-9s
The under-9s had a great first game together at home against the Warners Bay Bulldogs. Many of the young boys and girls played their first game they had heaps of fun getting into the mix with tackles and chasing the ball. The first score of the year went to Zachery O'Neill with a behind. The first goal of the year went to Kaleb Mckibben. Coach Damian Walker awarded Cooper Ashpole the Dominoes voucher for best on ground.
Under-11 boys
The side had a great start to the season with a win against Lake Macquarie-Wallsend. It was a thrilling game for spectators and first game for Matt Slater who earned best on ground. Great team play with multiple goal kickers. Congratulations to Jake Marsh and Danny Pitcher - 50 games. Final score 9.7.61 to 5.2.32
Under-13 boys
The boys had an impressive first round for Port defeating Newcastle City 8.6.54 to 3.6.24. After taking some time to get going in the first half, the coach instructed the team to pick up defensive pressure and it paid dividends. It was a real team effort covering all the ground with ruck Maddy Marsh kicking a goal before half time. After half time, Port came out firing kicking 4 goals to 0 to cement the lead and backed it up in the final quarter with another 2 goals to 1. Joel Smith was a stand-out with three goals to be awarded best on ground. (Goals : Smith 3, Hay 2, Edgar 1, Marsh 1, Warren 1)
Under-15s
Port's under-15s had a fantastic match at Ferodale Oval. The boys united as a team and won 11.5.71 to 6.6.42 against Warners Bay Red. The side came away with a hard-fought win for their first game of the season. The team had belief in each other, and all played their part in the win over Warners Bay. Best on ground was Toby Sinclair who laid the foundations from full back stopping numerous goals and setting up the push to move the ball into our forward line. Other stand out players were Tom Wylie, Divan Bezuidenhout and Arrowyn Carter.
