Round two of the AFL Hunter Central Coast Black Diamond women's plate competition, played at Ferodale Oval in Medowie, came down to a nail-biting finish with the Power Marlins edging out Wallsend-West 28-26. It was sweet reward for the team who had not enjoyed on field success since the Nelson Bay Marlins and Port Stephens Power AFL clubs combined.
"After battling through a few seasons with low numbers, the teams joined forces. The collaboration has been nothing short of successful in keeping the game moving forward. The win was the next step in making the success translate on game day," a spokesperson for the team said.
Saturday's match started with Wallsend putting three majors put on the board in the first quarter. Captained by Sammy Richards, Power Marlins responded with strong defence for the remainder of the game.
Power Marlins slotted two goals in the second quarter. Wallsend lead 26-12 at halftime. Power Marlins kicked two goals and two behinds in the third quarter to make it 26-all. Two points in the fourth quarter saw the team come on top for a two point win.
