SATURDAY

Lake Macquarie Autumn Fair Speers Point Park, Speers Point, 9am to 4pm. This Rotary Club-organised event features 50 vintage and specialist vehicles, a jumping castle, giant slide, mini-golf, bumper balls, swing ride, train rides around the park, face painting, petting zoo and pony rides, barbeque, as well as several food trucks.

National Rugby League Newcastle Knights vs Sydney Roosters, McDonald Jones Stadium, Broadmeadow, first-grade kick-off 7.30pm. The Knights look to bounce back from their 24-6 loss to Penrith against the competition heavyweights from Bondi.

Newy 100 Saturday & Sunday, Pacific Park, Newcastle, starts at 4pm Saturday. A team of athletes have set themselves a challenge to push their limits over a 100km run around Newcastle's beaches in the hope of raising money for Lifeline in Newcastle.

Rugby Union No.2 Sportsground, Newcastle West, 3pm. The Hunter Wildfires host Sydney powerhouse Randwick in the Shute Shield.

Surfing Australia NSW State Titles - Longboard and SUP Saturday & Sunday, One Mile Beach, Hannah Parade, One Mile. The Longboard State Titles consists of four days of action to crown multiple champions across all longboard divisions at Port Stephens.

Sydney Writer's Festival Digital Library, 12 Stewart Avenue, Newcastle West. Be engaged by conversations, debates and discussions from authors Helen Garner and Sarah Krasnostein (2-3pm) and the ABC's Richard Flanagan and Laura Tingle (4-5pm). No bookings required.

Tocal Field Days Saturday & Sunday, Tocal College, 815 Tocal Road, Paterson, 9am to 4pm. The Hunter Valley's largest agricultural show returns after a year off due to COVID-19, with agricultural exhibitions, food & drinks, live music and much more.

Hunter Valley Gardens Wedding Fair Hunter Valley Gardens, Pokolbin, 10am to 2pm. Check out eight ceremony locations, seven reception venues and endless photography options. Plus, there's a selection of wedding suppliers that will provide options for your dream wedding.

Newcastle CD & Record Fair Uniting Church Hall, Beaumont Street, Hamilton, 9am to 3pm. Browse through thousands of CD and vinyl records across all genres.

Smoke Off 2021 Royal Federal Hotel, Branxton, 11am to 3pm. Watch two teams battle it out over five smoked heats for the coveted Smoke Off trophy, plus live music and food.

Smoke In Broke Saturday & Sunday, June 12 & 13. There mightn't be much for the vegetarians, but if you love your meat it's definitely worth taking a drive out to the western Hunter Valley town of Broke. Sample various cuts of meat barbecued and roasted across multiple food outlets. There's also plenty of Hunter wines and craft beers to wash down those ribs and brisket.

King Stingray Saturday, Hamilton Station Hotel, Hamilton. There's a big buzz about the surf-rock band from Arnhem Land after just two singles. The five-piece is fronted by Yirrnga Yunupingu, the nephew of Yothu Yindi's late Dr M Yunupingu.

Nothing Else Matters: A Symphonic Tribute to Metallica Saturday, Civic Theatre, Newcastle. This is probably the closest you'll get to seeing Metallica in Newcastle as The George Ellis Orion Orchestra with Damage Inc perform the US band's beloved hits.

Sweater Curse Saturday, Cambridge Hotel, Newcastle West. The Brisbane three-piece have built a strong Novocastrian fan base with their brand of melodic indie-rock. They're touring their latest EP Push//Pull. Pinkish Blu are the support.

THEATRE

Mystery Musical Saturday, Civic Playhouse, Newcastle, 2pm & 7.30pm. The return of this theatrical experiment throws your conventional understanding of theatre-going out the window and we want you to come along for the ride.
