In a tight first grade encounter the Gropers defeated the Bulls 31-27. Singleton were too strong in the seconds with a comprehensive 25-0 result while Medowie Marauders outclassed the Bulls 35-0 in third grade. In the main game the Gropers worked hard for their win holding a slender lead 14-8 at half time. The Bulls closed the gap to 14-13 before the slick Bay backline including centre Junior Polai and winger Emerson Burgess scoring tries to widen the gap 28-13. The Bulls charged late to narrow the margin. The Bay's tough front rower Cameron Rowse was a worthy players' player. Fellow prop Riley Byfield was impressive on debut. The Marauders will host the games against Southern Beaches in Medowie on Saturday.
RAYMOND Terrace Magpies posted a solid 32-20 win over the Karuah Roos at Lakeside last Saturday. The Magpies, on the back of a hard working front row lead by John Schultz and Mick John, gained the hard yards up front. This gave the backs field position to attack with centre Rob Chaffey scoring two tries. Busy hooker Jack Beverly had a strong game. Lock forward Cain Roby picked up the players' player award with a non-stop performance. The Terrace host Stroud at home on Saturday. The Ravens ladies were out gunned by Maitland 44-0.
FINGAL Bay Bomboras had a mixed day against the West Wallsend Magpies on Saturday with the men's team going down 26-6 while the ladies league tag had a comprehensive 28-6 win. Bomboras stalwart and clever hooker Perry White marked his 100th game. Westy's tough and experienced forward pack got on a roll early with the Fingal boys in shock after two disallowed tries in the first half. The club still showed plenty of spirit to remain in the contest with young players Nathan Barnes, Jacob Napoli and Jacob Lamb all stepping up to the mark. Lock Josh Davies was the players' player. The Bomboras are two wins from three away games. They host the Kotara Bears on Saturday. The ladies league tag team controlled their game from the opening whistle to win 28-6. Grace Parfitt picked up a double. Tash Harris, Daetona Mayer and Nicole Bennet all scored four pointers. Marnie Parfitt kicked four goals. They play Hamilton at home on Saturday.
THE Mallabula Panthers had a tough road trip to Budgewoi on Saturday. The Panthers struggled for numbers and trailed 30-10 at half time. The side showed plenty of character in the back half of the game but went down 34-26. Leading from the front was blockbusting backrower Hayden Thompson who ran in four tries in the second half. Blake McKee at full back had a fine game. Non-stop hooker Dan DeRidder had his usual busy game. This Saturday the Bulla boys host Wangi.
