An avalanche near the town of Valloire in Savoye hit two groups of people, killing four on Saturday, the local prefecture said.
Rescuers used two helicopters and search dogs to help the victims of the avalanche, which came down near the Galibier pass.
Another avalanche near the almost 3,800-metres-tall Mont Pourri, south of Bourg-Saint-Maurice, struck hikers, three of whom died on Saturday.
Prefect Pascal Bolot urged utmost caution, as avalanches were also expected on Sunday.
Authorities had repeatedly warned of avalanches in the mountainous region. Several people were already killed by avalanches in the French Alps in the past weeks.
