The Bomboras men also started strongly and were in the mix at half time trailing the Kotara Bears 10-6. In the second half Fingal went off the boil and gifted the Bears too much ball from simple handling errors to see them run out victors 24-14. The improving young guns Jerome Lamb and Nathan Barnes had good games while some terrific ball carries by winger Ben George earned him the players' player award. This Saturday men will play Wallsend-Maryland while the ladies play Shortland at home.
RAYMOND Terrace Rugby League Club proved too strong for the Clarence Town Cobras on Saturday with an emphatic 58-12 win. The Magpies were on a roll early. Coach Cameron Scully pulled the boots on again for the second week in a row to add some direction and experience to the team. Hayden Thompson continued his try scoring spree with a double off the back of some powerful runs. Young back rowers Jack O'Neill and Lachlan Callen showed they could match with the best. SOPHIE Higgins, from Raymond Terrace's well known rugby league family, and Medowie's Amy Waterhouse represented Newcastle against the Riverina in the NSW Women's Country Championships final played at Wagga on May 8. The bus trip home would have been special with Newcastle cruising to a dominant 38-0 win. Sophie's sister Olivia has also taken off playing with the Central Coast Roosters. They remain undefeated, winning their past seven games and are set to take on South Sydney in a top of the table clash. Higgins brothers Luke and Liam are both playing for the Macquarie Scorpions this season after picking up a premiership playing together with South Newcastle several years ago.
