It is no secret that many not-for-profit and charitable organisations have struggled to maintain numbers in these uncertain times, but both the Tomaree and Medowie Probus clubs are determined to grow their numbers and get back to what they do best - fun, friendship and fellowship.
Both clubs are hoping to recruit new, younger members like 65-year-old Stephen Smith, who has lived in Corlette for 10 years since retirement and is proud to be Tomaree's youngest member.
Steve and his wife Alice have been involved in several social and sporting clubs over the years. "I was fortunate enough to retire early. I wanted to learn how to age well ... you hear a lot of stories of older people sitting at home a lot," he said.
"My parents were involved in Probus and View clubs, which were once or business people but not anymore. The focus on our club is on fun, socialising and fellowship. That sounds corny but it works.
"Essentially, I've formed deeper relationships with a whole new group of people. There are plenty of opportunities to do things, barbecues, dining out, walking, caravans and trips away. But also, computer and investment groups."
He said the Tomaree clubs conducts monthly meetings, usually with a guest speaker "that makes you realise what interesting lives other people can have".
"I also do some volunteering at Harbourside Haven nursing home, talking to the residents once a week. I've learnt from them that life is meant to be lived, not reviewed."
Probus Club of Tomaree is a men's club. If you are interested in joining call Steve Smith on 0439 803 953.
The Probus Club of Medowie is open to both men and women and meets in the Community Hall at Medowie from 10am on the third Wednesday of each month. Contact Daphne White on 4982 8950 or Grahame Henderson on 0412 493 187.
