The mullet have gone, the travelling bream are on the move and the luderick have arrived along the Nelson Bay breakwall.
The cycle continues, year after year the fish turn up on time.
For the cheapest entertainment in town park at the end of Teramby Road and take a wander along the breakwall anytime of the day and watch the luderick champions in action.
Luderick fishers are different from others as they push their trolleys along the breakwall before selecting a likely rock to fish off.
The rock must be relatively flat and near the water as this will be home base for the next few hours or until the bag limit, 10 per day, of luderick have been caught.
Multi-coloured floats, buckets of sandy berley, long handled landing nets and whippy rods are all standard equipment.
The real action begins when the float disappears under the surface and the hooked luderick battles for survival.
The rods bow into a semi-circle until the fish is wound to the surface and the landing net is put to use.
In the kitchen luderick perform far better than their reputation.
Treated right the boneless fillet is excellent.
