"Because of all the rain, along with uncertainty over COVID-19, we decided to extend the deadline by another six weeks to provide more breathing space for prospective entrants," said Sister Cities chairman Nigel Dique.
The competition is in two categories: students aged 5 to 12 years and 13 to 17 years.
Mr Dique said that the images would then be shared with the Port's sister cities in Tateyama, Yugawara and Kushiro in Japan, and Bellingham in the United States.
"Likewise, we have invited our sister cities to share with us favourite places in their communities," he said.
"When our very busy schedule of educational, cultural and sporting exchanges came to a dead halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was decided we needed to retain communication."
Destination Port Stephens CEO Eileen Gilliland said it was a wonderful initiative, allowing children to get involved in showcasing a combination of mother nature with human nature to students overseas.
To enter, students are invited to take a photo of up to three of their favourite Port Stephens locations and send them as attachments to sistercities@portsphens.net by the closing date on Tuesday, August 31.
Information about the committee and details of the competition prizes and entry conditions can be found at http://www.portstephenssistercities.com.
Prizes include family tickets for a whale watch, dolphin watch, entry to the Irukandji Shark and Ray Centre, entry to the Koala Sanctuary, sandboarding, a beach and dune tour, and 'Incredible by Nature' packs.
