Last Saturday the Gropers hosted competition heavyweights Hamilton at Strong Oval, going down 38-7 in first grade with Hamilton retaining the Rip Wright Shield.
The Bay took out the seconds 29-24 with tough prop Nathan McLeay awarded the players' player and fullback Jack Vincent having a good game.
The scoreline in first grade was no indication of the closeness of the game. Hamilton had a 7-0 lead at halftime and Gropers levelled at 7-7 soon after, however when the Hawks brought on their Wildfires players the game got away from the Gropers.
Players' player went to Ben Peper with key players in the backline centre Michael Hotene and fullback Miles Eckersley both having fine games. This Saturday the Bay hosts Maitland.
