After years of inaction, the controversial crane which has dominated the Nelson Bay CBD skyline for some four years is, with council approval, expected to be swinging in action by February, 2022.

Prominent Port Stephens developer Rod Salmon and his firm Coho Property last week lodged a development application with Port Stephens Council for a multi-million dollar luxury development where the crane has sat idle at 11-15 Church Road, Nelson Bay.
Construction is estimated at $30 million with homes sales expected to exceed $80 million.
Known as Ascent, the newly designed, nine-level development has been reduced from an original 33m in height to 31.5m, which Mr Salmon says is approximately 10 per cent over the height limit.
"We are hoping to get council approval despite this ... all going well we would expect to get a start on construction in February," he said.
"Construction work is then expected to take two years. This will be a great economic boost for the Bay with up to 200 construction jobs for predominantly local businesses."
Mr Salmon has partnered with Port Stephens-based company Drew Constructions and will where possible use local tradespeople over the two-year build.

Ascent would feature 80 luxury apartments with six penthouses.
"We want to create a quality development that people can live in, not to rent out of holiday let. We are targeting the relocaters from the Sydney and Melbourne precincts looking for a sea change."
The Tomaree Residents & Ratepayers Association said they are awaiting detailed specifications of the proposal.
"TRRA will be expecting compliance with floorspace, setback and landscaping requirements to ensure that the bulk and presentation of the structure makes a positive contribution to the townscape," a TRRA spokesperson said.
Mr Salmon has two other developments in the wing both of which he says are fully compliant with the council height limits.
The first is in Government Road in Nelson Bay, where work has commenced on 17 apartments to be known as Silver Point.
His other development proposal, with plans yet to be submitted to council, is for 24 apartments over nine levels (including carpark) at 17-19 Yacaaba Street.
