COVID case numbers
Case numbers across the state are updated by NSW Health while Hunter New England Health provides a regional break down each morning about 11am. The numbers record cases up to 8pm the day before.
Friday, October 1: Two cases
- One in Raymond Terrace, one in Salamander Bay
Of the 69 new cases recorded in the HNEH District overnight, two were in Port Stephens. Since August 5, there have been 988 cases in the District. Of those, 658 are currently active.
Thursday, September 30: Four cases
- Two in Raymond Terrace, one in Fern Bay, one in Medowie
The Hunter hit an unwanted new record on Thursday with 82 fresh COVID cases detected overnight. Of those, four were in Port Stephens. The region has now had 919 cases since August 5.
Wednesday, September 29: Three cases
- Two in Raymond Terrace, one in Tanilba Bay
Of the 55 new COVID cases in the HNEH District, three were from Port Stephens.
There were two deaths in the Hunter region overnight on Wednesday. A man in his 40s from Lake Macquarie died at home with COVID-19. A man in his 50s from Newcastle died at the Calvary Mater Hospital with COVID-19. The Lake Macquarie man was unvaccinated and the Newcastle man had received his first dose of vaccine.
Tuesday, September 28: Six cases
- Four in Raymond Terrace, one in Medowie, one in Lemon Tree Passage
Of the HNEH District's 63 confirmed cases on Tuesday morning, six were recorded in Port Stephens.
- 19 are from Newcastle LGA, 18 are from Lake Macquarie LGA, 13 are from Maitland LGA, four are from Cessnock LGA, one is from Muswellbrook LGA, one is from Singleton LGA and one is from Upper Hunter Shire LGA
- 35 cases were infectious in the community, 16 were in isolation for their entire infectious period and 12 are still under investigation
- 38 cases are linked to known exposures or clusters, 11 are unlinked, and the source of 14 cases is under investigation
In the Hunter, Muswellbrook, which came out of the lockdown on September 16, went back into lockdown conditions due to a rise in cases.
Monday, September 27: Four cases
- Four cases. Two in Raymond Terrace, one in Medowie, one in Twelve Mile Creek
After posting no new cases on Sunday, Port Stephens has recorded four on Monday - the highest number since September 13. Hunter New England Health District recorded 43 new COVID-19 cases up to 8pm on Sunday night. Of those, 21 are from Newcastle.
It comes as NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian indicated that NSW would reach its 70 per cent double dose vaccination goal on October 11.
Sunday, September 26: No cases
Of the 45 new cases posted in the District up to 8pm on Saturday, and reported on Sunday morning, none were in the Port Stephens LGA. It is the third time since the beginning of September, when the region's COVID-19 outbreak spread to Port Stephens, that the LGA has recorded a day of no cases.
It came as Lake Macquarie recorded 19 cases, Newcastle 15, Cessnock five, Maitland four, Singleton one and Mid-Coast one.
Saturday, September 25: One case
- One case in Raymond Terrace
Of the 31 new cases posted in the district overnight, one was from Port Stephens.
Friday, September 24: Two cases
- Two cases in Raymond Terrace
Of the 38 new cases in the HNEH District overnight, two are from Port Stephens. It is the first time in 10 days that Raymond Terrace has recorded COVID cases. There were 14 cases recorded for Newcastle, eight in Lake Macquarie, seven in Cessnock, five in Maitland, one in Muswellbrook and one in the Mid-Coast LGA.
Thursday, September 23: One case
- One case in Medowie
Of the 41 cases posted in the HNEH District overnight, one was from Port Stephens. The total number of cases for the district in the current outbreak - since August 5 - is 562. There are currently 347 active cases in the district. Lake Macquarie posted the highest number of cases: 26. Seven are from Newcastle, two in Cessnock, two in Maitland, two in Muswellbrook, one from the Mid-Coast LGA.

Wednesday, September 22: One case
- One case in Tanilba Bay
Forty-five cases of COVID-19 were diagnosed in Hunter New England Local Health District in the 24 hours to 8pm on Tuesday. This brings the total number of cases in the district to 521 since August 5. Of the new cases 20 are from Newcastle, 19 from Lake Macquarie, three are from Maitland, two from Cessnock and one from Port Stephens.
Tuesday, September 21: No cases
There were 18 new cases in the HNEH District on Tuesday but none were in Port Stephens. It is the second time in the past three days that the Port has recorded no cases. There are currently 304 active cases in the district.
Monday, September 20: Two cases

Sunday, September 19: No cases
Thirteen new cases were posted for the Hunter New England Health District on Sunday but none were in Port Stephens. Nine were from Newcastle, three in Lake Macquarie and one from Maitland. Since August 5, there have been 434 COVID cases in the health district, 267 are currently active.
Saturday, September 18: One case
- One case in Anna Bay
Of the 30 new cases in the Hunter New England Health District, one was from Port Stephens - in Anna Bay. There are currently 256 active cases across the health district. Of Saturday's cases, 16 are from Lake Macquarie, seven from Newcastle, five are from Maitland and one from Cessnock.
Friday, September 17: Two cases
- Of the 24 cases in the HNEH District, two were from Port Stephens. One each in Nelson Bay and Tanilba Bay.
Of the 24 cases, 12 were infectious in the community, seven were isolating while infectious and the source of infection for five cases are still under investigation.
Thursday, September 16: One case
- One case in Boat Harbour
The Port Stephens LGA posted one of the 16 new cases in the HNEH District overnight. Six are from Lake Macquarie, five from Newcastle, three from Cessnock and one other from Gunnedah. Ten of the 17 cases were infectious while in the community (HNEH is no longer distinguishing which cases were active in the community while infectious), five were isolating while infectious and one is under investigation. 612 close contacts of infectious cases are in isolation.
Thursday was a significant turning point for the area as the lockdown was lifted in parts of the Hunter. Dungog, Muswellbrook, Singleton and Upper Hunter came out of the lockdown at 1pm on Thursday as they had not recorded fresh cases in 14 days and were deemed low risk.
Wednesday, September 15: Two cases
- One case each in Shoal Bay and Fingal Bay
The Port's cases were two of 27 recorded in the Hunter New England Health District overnight. There were eight cases in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, six in Maitland and three from Cessnock. Twelve of the 27 cases were infectious while in the community, however HNEH is no longer distinguishing which cases were active in the community while infectious. NSW recorded 1259 new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8pm last night.

- One case in Raymond Terrace.
Monday, September 13: Four cases
- One case each in Salamander Bay, Nelson Bay, Anna Bay and Soldiers Point.
Hunter New England Health said that due to the high percentage of infectious people in the community and the geographical spread, "our public health advice is that there is no longer a public health benefit to break these down for each individual case and suburb" as the district has done for the past two weeks.

Saturday, September 11: One case
- One from Fern Bay. Was infectious in the community. Linked to a household contact.
Friday, September 10: Eight cases
- One in Anna Bay. Infectious status under investigation. Unlinked. Investigations ongoing.
- Two in Fingal Bay. Linked to a positive family member. Were isolating while infectious.
- One in Fern Bay. Infectious in community. Linked to a visitor from Sydney.
- One in Heatherbrae. Was isolating while infectious. Linked to Motto Farm Hotel cluster.
- One in Nelson Bay. Infectious in community. Linked to a positive family member.
- One in Shoal Bay. Was isolating while infectious. Linked to a household contact.
- One in Soldiers Point. Infectious in community. Unlinked. Investigation ongoing.
Thursday, September 9: Four cases
- All four are in Nelson Bay. All four were infectious while in the community. The cases are unlinked. Health is investigating the source of the infections.
Wednesday, September 8: Three cases
- One in Salamander Bay, was infectious in the community. The case is unlinked and investigations are ongoing.
- One in Shoal Bay, was isolating while infectious, linked to a household
- One in Nelson Bay, was isolating while infectious, linked to a household contact
Tuesday, September 7: Two cases
- Two in Shoal Bay, linked to the Shoal Bay cluster. Both were infectious while in the community.
Monday, September 6: One case
- One in Nelson Bay, linked to the Shoal Bay cluster. Was infectious while in the community.
Of the five cases in the Hunter, Hunter New England Health said four are linked to known exposures or family clusters and one case remains under investigation.
Sunday, September 5: Seven cases
- Two in Salamander Bay, isolating at home, linked to Shoal Bay cluster
- Two in Medowie, isolating at home, linked to Shoal Bay cluster
- One in Heatherbrae, was isolating, linked to Motto Farm Motel cluster
- One in Nelson Bay, was infectious in the community, linked to Motto Farm Motel cluster
- One in Shoal Bay, was infectious in the community, linked to Shoal Bay cluster
Saturday, September 4: Ten cases
- Five cases in Shoal Bay. The cases were infectious while in the community.
- Two in Heatherbrae. The cases were infectious while in the community.
- Two in Fingal Bay. These cases are linked to a previous case. The cases were infectious while in the community.
- One in Medowie. The case was infectious while in the community.
The 10 Port Stephens cases were part of the 15 announced for the Hunter on Saturday. Hunter New England Health said 10 of the 15 cases were linked to known exposures or family clusters, and the remaining five are still under investigation. Three cases of the 15 are linked to the Motto Farm Motel cluster (Heatherbrae).
Friday, September 3: Four cases
- Three cases from Salamander Bay are part of a family group which has been isolating after a member of the household tested positive the day before
- One in Heatherbrae. Was infectious in the community. The case is unlinked and is being investigated.
Thursday, September 2: Two cases
- One in Shoal Bay. Was infectious in the community. The case is unlinked and is being investigated.
- One in Salamander Bay. Was infectious in the community. This case is linked to a known exposure.
