"While Christmas is a time of joy and celebration for many, others doing it tough in our community find it an extremely difficult period for them personally," Raymond Terrace Salvation Army captain Yolande Soper said.

"The increased isolation, financial stress and mental health impacts of COVID-19 this year will only exacerbate these issues. We need the generosity of the public this year to once again partner with us in support of locals doing it really tough."

The Salvos in Raymond Terrace and Anna Bay is seeking donations of toys, non-perishable food and gift cards to distribute to local families during Christmas.

The call from the Port's two Hope centres comes as The Salvation Army launches its nation-wide Christmas Appeal, in which the organisation is seeking to raise $20 million this year to help individuals and families in need of support this festive season.

"Anyone in need this Christmas can reach out to us at Port Stephens Corps... and we'll do all we can to support you. We don't want anyone to go it alone this year," Port Stephens Salvos envoy Howard Koutnik said.

"If you need food, gifts, financial support or are feeling lonely, please get in touch with us."

Residents can donate goods directly to the Salvos Hope centres at 15 Carmichael Street, Raymond Terrace or 14 Port Stephens Drive, Anna Bay.

Donations can also be made to The Salvation Army's Christmas appeal via salvationarmy.org.au, calling 13 72 58, in person at any Salvos Store, Kmart (via the wishing tree appeal) or round up a Myer purchase.

The Salvation Army is also encouraging residents to buy from a Salvos Store this Christmas.

"Not only does Salvos Stores provide great value on quality items, it is also environmentally friendly and supports the work of The Salvos across the country. One hundred pre cent of the profits raised through Salvos Stores go towards The Salvation Army Community Programs supporting Australians doing it tough," the Salvos state.

Mr Koutnik's wife and fellow Port Stephens envoy said: "Christmas offers us a time to reflect and connect with one another and celebrate the joy of community.
