Members have set up an exhibition titled 'Sustainability by the Sea', featuring 12 large panels describing the array of underwater peculiarities familiar to the port, as well as a range of items and artefacts for both locals and visitors to enjoy.

TMA president Doug Cross said that the exhibition would run, free of charge, at the information centre until the end of February.

"We are still looking for a permanent base. We have kept our options open, including the possibility of moving into the recently vacated Tomaree Lodge. In the meantime we are spreading our exhibitions around to allow the community the opportunity to get a glimpse of the Port's history," he said.

"Last summer holidays we opened a pop-up at Broughtons on the Nelson Bay marina, this year we are at the visitor centre and who knows where we will be next year. The idea is to showcase a sample of our wares and hopefully to attract more people to the visitor centre."

'Sustainability by the Sea' is the brainchild of member Gabrielle Carrick, who was inspired by the maritime history of the port, what is happening today and to gaze into the future, particularly around leisure on the water and eco-tourism.

"We wanted to highlight anything to do with the ocean really, including diving, fishing, whale watching and the part played by monuments such as the Inner Light," Gabrielle said.

"Visitors are welcome to read the information on the panels or they can scan the QR code to find more information. It is both kid and adult friendly, and very educational."

While many of the artefacts belong to the Port Stephens region, the exhibition has borrowed some items from the Newcastle Maritime Museum for this project.

Another highlight is a rock pool diorama designed and assembled by Keith Green, from Soldiers Point.

Keith is also a member of the Ocean and Coastal Care Initiative (OCCI) and says he was inspired by the pools around the Port.

A second diorama of the June 1943 US troops landing on Zenith Beach is the creation of Roger Rigby.

Mr Cross said that the TMA was always on the lookout for new members. Cost is $10 and those interested can contact the members via the website.
