Club captain Jeff Simms said that the Makos would be complying with strict COVID-safe practices, while continuing to monitor the NSW public health orders over the coming weeks. The first of a series of social cricket tournaments will take place this Saturday, January 22.
"The Kristian White Memorial Day will be held at Don Waring Oval at the Tomaree sporting complex and feature Nelson Bay's Division 1 side pitted against Wallsend DCC in a 40-over match, starting at 1pm," Simms said.
"The club will be putting on a barbecue for all in attendance. We invite locals to come on down and support the boys and celebrate the life of one of the club's great former personalities and player Kristian White, who tragically passed away a few years back.
"Anyone with an interest in cricket or who knew Kristian is invited to attend and enjoy the activities."
Then on Sunday, February 13, Nelson Bay will pay tribute to another former cricketing stalwart with the annual Mark Palmer 7s, scheduled to also take place across all cricket pitches at the Tomaree sports complex.
Mark was a huge contributor to the Nelson Bay Cricket Club and wider Port Stephens community, and a tireless worker both behind the scenes and on the cricket field and he could often be found maintaining the pitch at Don Waring. He was also a respected paramedic in the Bay.
"This day is in memory of former club legend and president Mark Palmer. It also raises funds for the Mark Palmer scholarship program which supports the development of junior cricketers at Nelson Bay," Simms said.
"It's a 7-a-side competition where every player bowls one over and each team batting for seven overs per match with batters retiring on 35 runs to encourage a fast match. The boundaries are only small so there will be plenty of chances for boundary hitting and classic catches.
"Matches usually take just under an hour to complete. Each team is scheduled to play at least four matches on the day, guaranteeing plenty of action for both those participating on the field and onlookers.
"Team entry is $250 and a $5 per player registration to cover insurance costs [if your not already a club member]. This is a mixed competition for male, female and juniors to enter, as there are a few different grades."
Simms said that players can enter as a team or individuals can enter and will be placed in an existing side. All enquiries can be sent to nelsonbaycc@gmail.com.
Registrations for the Mark Palmer 7s will close on Sunday, February 6, or whenever spots are full.
The Nelson Bay Makos are still looking for senior players for the Saturday one-day competition to complete the back half of the 2021-22 Newcastle season.
Registration is $25 per player and $20 per match played, so players can play as little or as much as they like.
The club is family friendly and is looking for players of all abilities. Games are played on a Saturday afternoon starting at 1pm or 1.30 pm, depending on the grade.
The club is enjoying a great first season with major sponsor Fingal Bay Sports Club.
Other sponsors include Terry White Chemist, Anna Bay Sand & Earthmoving, Nelson Bay Locksmiths, Port Stephens Packaging, Salamander Bay Recycling, Uncle Franks Café, BP Anna Bay and J&S Marine Detailing.
