The champion Parramatta footballer and game caller will be joined by former Eels teammate John Muggleton and Newcastle's own Garth Brennan for the luncheon to take place at Soldiers Point Bowling Club on Friday, February 4, from 11am.
Master of ceremonies for the luncheon will be Gerry Collins, a distinguished ABC Grandstand sports broadcaster. Tickets are $40 each, which includes lunch, two drinks and $10 worth of raffle tickets.
Sterlo's record of achievements during the Eels' dominant 1980s [which they shared with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs] is hard to surpass.
In a career spanning 227 first grade games, the crafty halfback with flowing blond hair won four premierships with the famous blue and golds, played 13 state of origins for NSW and 14 tests for Australia.
He also took out two Rothman's Medals, two Dally M awards, the Clive Churchill in 1986 and the Adidas 'golden boot' for finest international player of the year - an accolade he shared with Kiwi Hugh McGahan.
Following his stellar career on the field, Sterlo took to the microphone as a radio and television analyst, where he again shone.
His longtime friend and cross-code pioneer John Muggleton joined Sterlo at the Parramatta club in 1980, where he stayed until 1989, also sharing in the four grand final victories. Coach Jack Gibson moved him from the centre to second row.
Muggleton played three tests for Australia and two origins for NSW before making the big leap into coaching. His first assignment was with the North Sydney Bears under 23 side in 1993 before switching codes to rugby union and enjoying an illustrious career that took him around the world, coaching in Japan, England, Georgia, Wales and the USA.
Garth Brennan has a close affiliation with Port Stephens, playing for the North Nelson Bay Marlins in a career that also included stints with West Rosellas, Waratah Mayfield Cheetahs and the Newcastle Knights.
A former NRL Gold Coast Titans coach, Brennan was appointed as the new head of pathways for the Knights in September 2021 after spending time with the club's Harold Matthews, Jersey Flegg, NYC and NSW Cup teams.
He has also coached Penrith Panthers NYC team, NSW under 18s and NSW residents. His challenge now is to get the Newcastle Knights back to nurturing its local talent.
Due to COVID protocols, bookings to attend the luncheon are essential. Phone the club on (02) 4982 7173.
