At this week's council meeting Cr MacKenzie went ahead with a notice of motion he tabled which called on the general manager "to provide a report on the process to reclassify and rezone land within Boomerang Park from community land to operation land for the purpose of seniors housing".
He told the Examiner just weeks ago the money raised from the potential project would be reinjected into work at the park.
A report by the council's property services section manager Carmel Foster stated while a park master plan was being prepared, the section the mayor had referred to was under-used.
"The land identified in this notice of motion is currently under-utilised and this reclassification and rezoning would provide a new use for the area, which has good connections with the surrounding area," she stated in the report.
The matter was discussed at Tuesday night's council meeting.
