A POINT to ponder: Have you ever wondered why the higher ranked players seem so often prepared to bid up and happily go one or two "off". First thing to notice is that they mostly only do this if they are non-vulnerable. Why so?

Well they know the scoring system intimately and are very aware that two "off" non-vulnerable in a 4H contract gives them -100.
In contrast the opposition making 3S (nine tricks) gives them 140 so going off two was a great result. So if you want to improve your position in the results table then understand the scoring system and use it to decide if a sacrifice bid is a good idea.
Scorer's comment: The output from the BridgeMates are only as good as the information fed in (garbage in equals garbage out). So please check the details before pressing that OK button.
A little light relief (courtesy of Eddie Kantar): When Oswald Jacoby was in his 80s, he bid every time it was his turn. His partners asked why. He said "At my age the bidding may never get back around to me."
In Hawks Nest Bridge Club news the Tilligerry Teams match was a great day and 48 boards played in the finest of spirits. Honours kind of even as the individual winning team was from Tilligerry (Janet and Peter Kieran, Paul Rooms, Margaret Sylow) but the winning side was Hawks Nest. Alas, the event could not be scored using BridgeMates, so the detailed results are not yet to hand nor therefore on the web page.
The catering organised by Margaret Rowden was hugely successful. Thanks to Margaret and to the many volunteers (and their delicious slices), who looked after us so well. Also great to see everyone help in some way to tidy up afterwards, many thanks.
Encouragement Day takes place tomorrow, March 28. The encouragement section is for those with less than 25 MasterPoints and open. If you have not registered please, for organisational reasons, turn up early.
Congratulations Carolyn Seymour and Jim Thatcher for coming third in the Maitland pairs Congress against 46 pairs and very good opposition.
