Mr Spearpoint has ambitions of being a doctor and is studying a bachelor of medical science at the University of Sydney, with at least seven years of study ahead of him.
He said growing up on a farm he originally wanted to be a veterinarian but changed his mind in about year 10.
Mr Spearpoint was one of eight students to receive $2000 to help with their education expenses, as well as a 12-month membership to the YMCA Port Stephens as they embark on their tertiary careers.
Port Stephens Council partnered with businesses in the area to support the individuals for the 2014 Port Stephens Mayoral Academic Scholarships.
Weathertex, The Wests Group, Moonshadow Cruises and Port Stephens 4WD Tours, Hunter Land, Destination Port Stephens, Macka's Sand and Soil Supplies, Newcastle Airport, Tomago Aluminium and the YMCA Port Stephens all joined with the council to run the 2014 program.
"This is an important program because of the people it benefits: the young people of Port Stephens who are going to go on to achieve amazing things," Port Stephens mayor Bruce MacKenzie said.
The scholarship recipients this year are studying in a range of fields, including medicine, information technology and teaching.
