Port Stephens Council is calling for expressions of interest from community groups interested in setting up a market stall on the day.
Groups wanting to promote themselves, or sell their wares, are invited to contact the council on 4980 0255 and lodge a form.
"The aim of the day is a celebration for the community by the community," Port Stephens SES representative Alan Williams said.
He said after last year's Australia Day, 10 new members joined the SES.
It was equally beneficial for groups such as the Raymond Terrace Men's Shed which sold woodwork pieces to raise funds.
The emphasis on community is part of a new direction for the day, with an advisory panel formed to help organise the events.
Anyone with ideas or those interested in the advisory panel can contact the council for more information.
