Last week volunteers from Shoal Bay Community Association and Shoal Bay Beach Preservation Committee finished constructing a 100-metre section of a pathway through bushland along the suburb's foreshore.
Once completed, the 450-metre path will cut through bush along Shoal Bay foreshore, starting at the intersection of Government and Shoal Bay roads, paving an easy route westward to Anzac Park.
The path will enable walkers and cyclists to go between Tomaree Head and Soldiers Point via Nelson Bay and Corlette, association chairman Peter Thomas said.
"This long, unimpeded walkway with magnificent water views will add to the list of 'must-do' visitor attractions," Mr Thomas said.
Port Stephens Council approved the construction of the first 100 metres of the pathway in June, to be completed by the association in conjunction with the preservation committee.
Funding for the work, about $6000, came from the committee's 355c funds.
It is expected the next 100 metres will cost the same, and the council must approve funding before volunteers lay the next stage of the path.
