Refuge owner Mary Hickie recalled the story as told to her by the council ranger who delivered the dog to the Williamtown pound.
Ms Hickie said the ranger was called to the boat ramp at Raymond Terrace after reports that a dog was running around uncontrolled.
When he arrived at the boat ramp, the ranger spotted the dog, which ran towards him, and got out to investigate. The dog then disappeared.
"The ranger hopped back in the car and you wouldn't believe it, but there she was, sitting on the passenger seat," Ms Hickie said.
Refuge staff could find no identifiable information for the dog, including a name for her.
Ms Hickie said the pointer was medium in height, liver-coloured, healthy, friendly and energetic.
"She has had some training," Ms Hickie said. "She sits when you tell her to sit."
The dog will cost $235 to adopt from the refuge, which includes desexing, vaccinations, microchipping and a lifetime registration. Phone 4965 0100.
