For the past six years Gail Badger has organised the Coles Walk For Cancer from Nelson Bay to Fingal Bay.
Coles staff from the region, sponsored by friends and family, raised money for the Cancer Council by walking the eight kilometres between the suburbs.
Since 2008 when Ms Badger started the event, it has raised $45,000.
This year Ms Badger, who has won a Coles Community Hero Award, has opened the walkathon for anyone to walk the eight kilometres, share their stories and get to $50,000 for the Cancer Council.
"Due to losing family members to cancer, I felt I needed to do more in raising awareness about the vital job the Cancer Council perform whilst also raising much-needed funds," Ms Badger said.
"I don't know many families or friends who have not been touched in some way by this terrible disease.
"And to me this walk is for them."
Walkers are required to raise money before walking between Nelson Bay Coles and Barry Park at Fingal Bay through sponsorship.
On the day of the event, October 4, walkers will carry buckets and take donations from the general public.
During the walk along the foreshore, walkers share their stories before enjoying a barbecue lunch at Barry Park.
To take part, call into Coles at Tanilba Bay to pick up a form or contact Ms Badger on 4980 5300 or g.badger@exemail.com.au. Registrations are being taken now.
