About 7.45am on October 23 Port Stephens police were called to Griffin Street, off the Pacific Highway near the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens at Heatherbrae.
Initial inquiries revealed a shot had been allegedly fired near an early model white Honda Civic sedan, located in Griffin Street.
Police said no one was injured during the incident.
It is believed the gunman fled the scene in an early model white Holden utility.

Officers stopped the vehicle and arrested two men, aged 20 and 25, who were taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station. They continue to assist police with their inquiries.
A crime scene has been established at Griffin Street, which will be examined by specialist forensic officers.
Inquiries into the matter are continuing.
Detectives are now appealing for anyone with information that could assist to come forward.
In particular they would like to hear from any motorists who may have seen the Holden utility with a silver tray containing toolboxes or the Honda Civic sedan, which had been travelling north on the Pacific Highway about 8am Thursday.
