The council plans to rezone the 11-hectare parcel of land, which is low lying and prone to flooding, from rural to conservation.
According to a council spokesperson, the site is a habitat for numerous threatened species, including squirrel gliders, and contains important endangered vegetation. It also drains into a part of Wallis Lake that is known to be suffering from urban runoff.
Council believes there are benefits in protecting the land to allow for natural filtering of stormwater.
The planning proposal for the rezoning is on exhibition at Great Lakes Council’s Forster customer service centre until November 26 or on greatlakes.nsw.gov.au.
