Seven students created the Stroud Scribbler, guided by teacher Tess Hilleard, which won best overall entry in the primary section of the Herald competition, and best news story.

The Stroud Scribbler’s team – Alyssa Mudryk, Amity Carter, Thomas Dew, Emma Field, Amy Klein, Sara Mudryk and Peter Raine – collected the awards at the November 25 presentation.

More than 350 people turned out to Hunter Stadium, where the ceremony was held, to celebrate the efforts of more than 90 schools across the Hunter, Lake Macquarie and Central Coast who produced their own two-page newspaper.

Each school’s newspaper entry in the competition appeared within the pages of the Newcastle Herald throughout the year.

Stroud won best news story for its exclusive interview with the son of the pilot who was never found after his plane crashed in the Barrington Tops in 1981.

For winning best overall entry, the school received a $2000 cheque.

Margaret Lang, Anne Frost, Margaret Francis, John Bowen, Melissa Bonney and Kevin Hutchins were thanked by the students for sharing their stories with the Stroud Scribbler .

School principal Carolyn Bowman  was extremely proud of the children and their achievement.
