DURING recent months I have constantly heard the never-ending moan of chainsaws claiming more majestic trees, presumably to the usual excuse that they drop leaves, block sun, crack footpaths and are possibly dangerous etc.

I find it ironic that trees are cut down as they are dangerous in high winds when it is the tall trees that actually create wind breaks and obstruct the build up of strong winds, preventing a desert atmosphere and cooling the planet.
As our planet warms, due largely to land clearing and tree destruction, it creates a desert landscape with increased heat and winds. Would it not be more logical to promote trees or at least replace the ones destroyed?
A proposed stone wall at Grahamstown Dam to cost $1.5 million could be replaced with beautiful native trees at a mere fraction of the cost.
