TUESDAY:
SEVEN NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) crews are working on containing a grass fire at Salt Ash.
The RFS was called to Rookes Road at Salt Ash about 11am on reports a grass fire was burning in the area.
Glenn Byrnes, district service officer for the RFS, said the grass fire was currently burning in a westerly direction at the end of Rookes Road, closest to Oyster Cove.
‘‘Currently there is one powerline down,’’ Mr Byrnes said.
‘‘The energy company has been contacted.’’
Mr Byrnes said there were three heavy, three medium and one light category fire trucks currently at Rookes Road controlling the fire.
Additionally, there was two group officers one one fire investigator on scene.
Mr Byrnes said the fire was slowly moving west toward the Hunter Water board but had been bought under control.
He said no houses were currently under threat.
The large amount of smoke was due to the ground being wet and the influence of a north-east sea breeze, Mr Byrnes said.
