Duncan Gay, the Minister for Roads and Freight and the Minister for the North Coast, was joined by Port Stephens Liberal candidate Ken Jordan in Tea Gardens on Monday morning where it was announced 16 boating projects in the electorate would be funded under the Boating Now program.
‘‘Boating makes up a big part of our culture in Port Stephens,’’ Mr Jordan said.
‘‘It’s a way of life for some of us and I’m glad we’re committed to improving it and making it safer.’’
Key projects for Tea Gardens Hawks Nest would include $250,000 to install a new public jetty along Marine Drive and $120,000 to improve access to the East Gardens wharf and pontoon.
The state government would spend $80,000 to identify options to redevelop and revitalise the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest foreshore and $50,000 to create a new dinghy storage and launch at Anzac Park.
Mr Gay said the NSW government would work with the Port Stephens and Great Lakes councils plus other ‘‘delivery partners’’ to finalise the scope of each of the 16 projects, including funding contributions and timeframes.
He said that the $2.5 million was within the existing NSW Maritime budget and all projects would be delivered by the end of 2017.
A further $10 million had been allocated to second-round priority projects, which would be considered from 2017 onwards.
‘‘This is a massive funding injection into the area,’’ Mr Gay said.
‘‘[It] will ensure all boaties are kept safe whilst travelling on our waters.’’
