"Labor MPs have to respect the Baird Government's mandate to lease the poles and wires," Mr MacDonald said at Monday's official opening of the $45 million Nelson Bay Road upgrade between Bobs Farm and Anna Bay.
"Under previous Labor governments, major road works such as the Nelson Bay Road upgrades were either delayed for years or not even started."
Reduced travel time and improved road safety for the 7000 daily motorists were at the core of the 4.2 km road widening, said Roads Minister Duncan Gay during the opening.
"To improve safety and access there are five new pedestrian refuges, five u-turn facilities and 10 bus bays, new street lighting and widened road shoulders," Mr Gay said.
"Protecting native flora and fauna in the area was also a priority - two fauna underpasses and 2.5 kilometres of fauna fencing for koalas and other species have been installed.
"A glider rope crossing will also be installed."
