Receivers for the proposed four-star beach resort sited at the entrance to Anna Bay have put forward a new buyer, the Hong Kong-based Anke Smart City, expressing interest in completing the partially-built $50 million development.
In a statement to the Examiner, receiver Andrew Sallway, from Grant Thornton Australia, said that the receivers and managers of Birubi Beach Resort had undertaken a thorough public marketing campaign.
"Following on from the campaign, the secured creditor, Anke Smart City Ltd, or one of its nominated entities, intends to acquire the property and complete the development.
"As Anke is a foreign owned company, it has sought Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) approval and is currently awaiting FIRB's decision.
"In the interim, the receivers and managers remain in control of the site."
As for the payment of unsecured creditors believed to be owed in the vicinity of $1 million, Mr Sallway would only say "that is a matter for the directors".
The news is music to the ears of thousands of Anna Bay residents including John Vassallo, who has been critical of the receiver for allowing the site to fall into disrepair.
"The site is an absolute disgrace, an eyesore, and has become a haven for vandals and anti-social behaviour," Mr Vassallo said.
"I have no issue with a new owner wanting to clean up the site and complete the development ... provided they are cashed up and have the money to pay contractors."
Port mayor Bruce MacKenzie said he was keen to see the tourist facility developed, providing jobs and tourism dollars for the Anna Bay community.
In a chequered history, the 4.13-hectare resort was placed in the hands of receivers after its Chinese owners went into receivership nearly three years ago.
