The Cancer Council's community relations co-ordinator Glen Parsons is working with Port cancer groups to rejuvenate the event which operated successfully between 2005-10.
"These events do tend to ebb and flow and it's due to a demand from the Port Stephens community that the relay is back on the agenda," Mr Parsons said.
"The primary aim of relay for life is to raise funds for cancer research, provide support care, to help lobby governments and fund programs which reduce the risk of cancer."
Mr Parsons stressed that the relay was not a running event.
"Some people will want to run, some will walk and others will just attend in a supportive role - all with an objective of raising funds and participating in a family friendly outdoor activity."
One of the Port groups to offer their support is the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group, where members Grainne Myles, Sue Sullivan-Gould and Cathy Turner are always seeking new fundraising avenues.
The Port Stephens relay will take place at Tomaree sporting complex on Saturday, November 28, from 10am to 10pm.
