The 50-year-old businessman from Medowie will contest both the mayoral and central ward positions as an independent candidate.
‘‘I am not aligned to any political party but I do understand how the election process works so I would be looking at forming alliances or preferences,’’ Mr Maslen said.
‘‘About nine months ago I attended my first council meeting and after having seen first hand the tactics of certain councillors I decided right there and then that I had to do something.
‘‘I have 18 years’ experience working in the security business and there is nothing more I hate than bullying ... my whole life even as a school kid I would be the one people turn to if someone was being picked on.’’
Mr Maslen said he was concerned at the lack of due process on Port Stephens Council, which he has branded ‘the MacCouncil’.
‘‘There are a number of councillors who run on the same agenda which is not always conducive to the majority of what the people see as fair and equable,’’ he said.
Mr Maslen said his personal involvement in the RAAF base water contamination scare [his family rents out a Williamtown property which falls into the exclusion zone] had piqued his interest in government affairs.
‘‘I am a firm believer in ensuring the level of communication in any sphere of business or government is open and transparent,’’ added Mr Maslen, who met with Premier Mike Baird six weeks ago to air his concerns over a lack of community consultation.
On the issue of the Raymond Terrace men’s shed, Mr Maslen said there were two alternative sites which needed to be considered - the first at the vacant block of land adjacent to the Lakeside fire station and the second in Boomerang Park near the dog training area and council depot.
‘‘I have the original plans for the men’s shed proposed near the dog training area from I believe back in 2013.’’
A first time candidate, Mr Maslen dismissed the notion that he would be overawed, saying he was already in campaign mode said and was prepared for the 12-month battle ahead.
‘‘I am not worried about what others say, I am thick skinned ... I do believe in due process and fairness for everyone regardless of who they are and that the rules are there for everyone to follow.
‘‘When I informed my wife [Karyn] of my intention to run she told me that I was a glutton for punishment, but I know this is the right thing for me to do and this is the right time.’’
