Ray Fairweather posted on the You Know You’re from Maitland Facebook page that the Lorn side of the river is wasted community space that should be used by council.
“Yes it gets flooded at times, but it is safe guarded to some extent from damage due to flood waters hitting the south bank during floods,” Mr Fairweather said.
“The Lorn side of the river has great exposure to the public from the walkway and would be an excellent location for picnics etc.
“Taree has a park on the Manning River with tables, seats that could be quickly removed when a flood threat looked like happening," he said.
Cr Fairweather asked for other opinions and received a myriad of suggestions.
One of his Facebook followers suggested a water taxi service from Maitland to Morpeth and Paterson.
Another said a rivercat terminal similar to one operating from Parramatta.
Several followers called for barbecues, tables and seating to be installed on the Lorn side.
There were also calls for a fenced dog-off-leash exercise area.
Others called for easier access to the river for water craft users, others suggesting a parking area for mobile homes.
“Judging from the responses on Facebook there are plenty of Maitland residents who feel the same way I do,” Mr Fairweather said.
“I believe Maitland council has some section 94 funds in the bank that could be put to good use for fixing that side of the river.
“You sit in Lavenders and have a cup of coffee looking at the Lorn side and there’s just nothing there,” he said.
Mr Fairweather said once The Levee’s next stage is complete it will draw in tourists but there will be no attraction on the other side of the river.
“There needs to be an attraction on the Lorn side. I wouldn’t even mind seeing a kayak hire business operating over there,” Mr Fairweather said.
Another person commenting on Mr Fairweather’s post said he walked the riverbank everyday.
“Everything is much improved now and out city is growing.
“Ray is right, there is space we can use, effectively.
“A family park, recreational canoes, RV facilities, all have been suggested, all should be evaluated.
“Council needs to be proactive on this.
“We don’t want a Colourbond city with no heart.
“Ensure there are parks in the suburbs, but make the ‘heart’ a living place for residents and visitors,” they said.
