But this year the 15-year-old has been selected to play in two NSW teams, and has two opportunities to go the one step further and play at the national level.
For the third year in a row, Flannery has been selected to play for NSW at the Australian Junior Age Championships.
She was selected for the NSW junior squash team after putting on a top performance at the state selection championships held in Coffs Harbour earlier this year.
She won five from her seven games, including individual and teams events.
This year Flannery will move up from under-15s at the AJA Championship to play in the under-17 division.
The tournament will be held in Sydney Between September 24 and 27.
But what is more exciting for Flannery, who attends Tomaree High School, is her first ever selection into the NSW Combined High Schools state team.
She was picked to play for the Hunter team last year, but had to sit out due to injury.
The under-15 CHS girls’ squad will head to New Zealand to play in the Trans-Tasman Challenge between August 22 and 25.
“It feels really good to be picked,” Flannery said.
Flannery, playing for NSW, will face squads from Queensland and New Zealand in the challenge.
Girls from the NSW and QLD sides have the opportunity to be selected for the Australian squad.
Flannery also has the opportunity to be selected to play for Australia if she does well at the AJA championship.
It has been a fast rise to the top for Flannery since she took up squash three years ago.
She joined her father, Greg Julian, at Tomaree Squash Club and has not looked back.
“I like the social side of squash,” Flannery said.
“I like playing here [Shoal Bay] because it’s where I first started.
“Squash is fun to play and it’s great for fitness.”
Flannery, sponsored by BML Oliver Squash, plays socially at Tomaree Squash Club, based above the Pelican Cafe at Shoal Bay, on Thursdays.
She also trains at Cardiff Squash Courts twice a week with a coach.
