Planning Minister Rob Stokes announced in front of the David Jones building that the government is calling for expressions of interest in the sale and regeneration of the 1.66 hectare site fronting the mall.
The site is jointly owned by the government’s UrbanGrowth arm and developer the GPT Group.
Mr Stokes said the buyer would be required to redevelop within a 12-storey height limit, revised from 20-storeys following public outcry.
The minister said he was “hearing there’s strong interest” in the site, from UrbanGrowth and its agents. He said he would like to see a local consortium buy and redevelop the site.
More to come.
