ANIMAL lovers and activists who discovered two dead kangaroos on the side of a major arterial road with severe injuries and rope tied around their legs are concerned more cruelty has made its way to Coalfields streets.

Renee Wheway, of East Branxton, found the male and female kangaroos on Wednesday morning, dumped only metres off John Renshaw Drive at the Surveyors Creek bridge, near Kurri Kurri.
Both had suffered significant injuries, including fractures and severe grazes, which has led to speculation that they had been dragged behind a vehicle.
The animals were also joined by a rope, tied tightly to their legs and cutting into the bone to suggest it had been pulled with some force.
“I just think this is a case of animal cruelty,’’ Ms Wheway said.
“I don’t think they have just both been hit by a car and someone has used the rope to drag them off the road.
“I think someone has gone out and had fun with these poor things before dumping them in a place where everyone could see them.
“The female, she was quite a mess.’’
Ms Wheway said there were tyre marks near the carcasses, as well as drag marks.
Jayne Cvetanoksi, of the online group Newcastle Against Animal Cruelty, also visited the site on Wednesday and said there had been anecdotal evidence of other dead kangaroos being discovered around the Kurri Kurri area with rope tied around them.
“Something very strange has happened,’’ she said.
“And they have not been there very long either.
“With the other cases of animal cruelty around that area, we are very concerned.’’
Both women said the female kangaroo had suffered the most injuries, with a lot of fur and skin rubbed off from its rump as well as the severe leg fractures.
They called on authorities to investigate.
The RSPCA and Central Hunter police have been informed of the discovery.
