RAYMOND Terrace Soccer Club had two women’s teams play grand-finals at Mallabula Sports Complex on Sunday, September 4.
The club’s all age women L side faced Wallsend and the under-16 B side played Cooks Hill.
The under-16 side was the only junior Terrace team to make it through to the final this year.
All teams played exceptionally well. Victories went to both Raymond Terrace sides.
The first goal in the AAW game on Sunday was scored against Raymond Terrace.
However, the women fought back to bring the score up to 2-1.
Wallsend scored another goal against themselves making it 2-all by half time.
It was only a few minutes out from full time when Raymond Terrace were able to score the game-winning goal.
The final score was 3-2.
Coaches Rodney Landers said he was proud of his side.
In the under-16's game, it was neck-and-neck with a nil-all score at the end of full time.
It was only in the second half of extra time that Raymond Terrace scored, giving the side a win of 1-nil.
Yusof Jamadar, coach of the under-16 side, said his side’s grand-final win was extra special as their season had been riddled with injury.
“We had eight new girls, six hadn’t played before,” he said.
“My daughter, Josie, broke her wrist in the first game and then got glandular fever. It was a struggle all year. Another girl dislocated her elbow and had a few weeks off, two girls were carrying ankle injuries most of the season and some others have hip injuries.
“We were lucky to get six girls out of the 14 registered players at training.
“It wasn’t until the last round that everyone was fit to play. We had a strong end to the season.”
The Terrace under-16 team defeated Cooks Hill, the 2016 minor premiers, in the semi-final to go straight through to the grand-final where they again faced the Newcastle side.
First grade men
RAYMOND Terrace Soocer Club’s senior first grade side has earned its place in this Saturday's Newcastle Football Zone League One grand-final.
The Terrace defeated Cooks Hill United 6-0 on aggregate over their two-legged semi-final series.
In the first leg, played at King Park on August 28, the Terrace won 4-0 with goals to Morgan Reynolds (three) and Peter Petryk (one).
The return leg was played at Cooks Hills on September 3 with the Terrace winning 2-0.
Goals to Morgan Reynolds and Josh Botham.
Coach Ken Catford praised all his players after keeping Cooks Hill scoreless and earning another grand-final appearance.
This will be the Terrace’s third final in a row after taking out the Zone League 2 finals in previous years.
Catford said he couldn't be prouder.
All the players have stepped up this season after being promoted from Zone League 2.
“No one in the comp gave us a chance but we have shown with our results we can mix it with the best teams in this competition,” Petryk said.
The grand-final will be played at Macquarie Field, Speers Point on September 10 from 3pm
