Cessnock resident Carly Anderson said that “some low life scum” went into her Vineyard Grove backyard on Saturday night and attacked her unsuspecting beagle Max.
Ms Anderson took the pooch to see the vet, who confirmed that it was some kind of acid that had caused the burn.
Max has started treatment and Ms Anderson said he seemed to be recovering well so far.
She posted a photo on Facebook to alert others to what happened.
The post has since been shared more than 7,000 times.
The RSPCA have been in contact with Ms Anderson and are conducting investigations.
RSPCA chief inspector David O’Shannessy said the incident was a concern.
“If this attack was deliberate, that’s obviously very concerning,” he said.
If anyone has any information about the incident, they are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or call 1300 CRUELTY.
The maximum penalty for this kind of incident is a $5,500 fine and or six months imprisonment.
