HUNTER residents have been offered a hearty slice of Shanghai, thanks to a pop-up Chinatown Street Festival that filled Beaumont Street in Hamilton with vibrant sights, sounds and cuisine.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Newcastle organised the fourth annual festival, which was hosted by comedian Michael Hing.
Attendees at the five-hour event could watch Sydney-based dance team Ji Wu Koon perform the traditional lion dance; dragon stilt walkers; as well as tai chi, kung fu, music and dance performances. They could also participate in Chinese language classes and paper cutting and folding; try their hand at chopstick and dumpling making competitions; dress in traditional costumes; and have their face painted, Beijing Opera style.
The festival was the last event in Newcastle China Week, which also included a night noodle market, outdoor cinema and business forum. University director of strategic institution relations (Greater China) Rhys Palmer said the week celebrated the region’s growing economic and cultural ties with China.
