The state government says a compensation figure for greyhound owners has not yet been finalised for implementation after a statewide ban on dog racing is introduced. The government is considering payouts of up to $1500 per dog for owners, News Corp has reported in recent days.

Labor Party member and former Cessnock mayor Maree Callaghan criticised the possible $1500 payouts as being too low. She said many canines were worth far more than that figure if they remained racing dogs.
“Greyhound people are quite insulted at the $1500 compensation,” she said.
“This is grossly insulting.”
Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald said the government had not finalised a compensation figure.
“The NSW Government is waiting on Transition Co-ordinator Dr Keniry's report, which is due soon,” he said.
