“It was as least 1.5 metres long, and probably closer to two metres,” Greg said.
“I have seen others in that area that would have been a bit bigger, but this one was certainly right up there with them.”
Greg came across the goanna on Friday last week.
During the next half hour, he recorded some “awesome video” as the goanna climbed a tree, seeking to raid a magpie’s nest.
Greg posted the video on his website, findmyaustralia.com, which includes many videos and photos of nature in Australia, including a recent look at Sutherland Shire treasures.
Greg said the battle between the goanna and magpie was absorbing.
“The magpie would not give up – it kept flying around the goanna and hassling it.
“The magpie put up a big fight and eventually won the battle.
“The goanna walked back down the tree, straight past me as though I didn’t pose any threat to him, and headed off to look for easier prey.”
Greg, an Alfords Point resident, says on his website: “Kayaking, mountain biking ,diving and my general love of adventure and what Australia has to offer, has given me an opportunity to see things in their natural environment”.
“It was from this that I began taking photos and videos so I could show others what amazing experiences I was encountering.
“Most importantly I wanted to have my very own brag wall.
“Findmyaustralia.com is a project I started in 2015 to enable me to show off this great country of ours and hopefully inform and give you ideas for your very own Australian adventure.”
