The hot topic was discussed as a mayoral minute at Port Stephens Council last Tuesday night.
“I think we should acknowledge what our volunteers have done at an event after the fire season,” the mayor of Port Stephens Cr Bruce MacKenzie said.
“We’ve probably had the biggest fire in terms of hectares Port Stephens has ever seen even if it didn’t claim the number of buildings the Williamtown fire did in 2013.”
Cr Peter Kafer asked that the thank you be extended to those volunteers who came from outside of the area.
“I suggest that we contact the Rural Fire Service to make contact with those other people,” he said.
Cr Paul Le Mottee backed the gesture as a member of the council’s fire committee.
“After seeing all the behind scenes work that goes on I was very proud to see the response to this fire like a well-oiled machine.”
The council will make the invitation through NSW RFS.
