The talented all-rounder from Nelson Bay Cricket Club was recently selected for the NSW Indigenous Women’s cricket team to play in the Imparja Cup in Alice Springs next February.
This is not Astley’s first time playing representative cricket. The 19 year old plays for the first grade team Sydney Rangers, as well as having played at the Imparja cup since she was 15.
Her game continues to improve thanks to her hard work and dedication over the past couple of years.
“I’ve really pushed myself, worked on my batting, improved my fitness and strength. I just love playing, as it’s a good challenge for the mind and body.”
Craig Astley, Jemma’s father and president of the Nelson Bay Cricket Club, is immensely proud of his daughter. “She works so hard and is such a focused player. I tell her every opportunity you get, you have to make the most of it, and she does.”
The Wonnarua woman says playing at the Imparja Cup has opened her eyes to the depth of Indigenous culture in Australia.
“At the Imparja Cup, you are surrounded by all of these different cultures, and it makes you feel really in touch with your culture and where you come from. It’s a great tournament.”
The NSW Women’s Indigenous team will be looking to win their eighth consecutive Imparja Cup title in Alice Springs next February.
