The new observation tower will assist the One Mile Beach Lifesavers in not only seeing sharks, but spotting people in distress and providing a clear line of vision during big swells.
According to a spokesman from Port Stephens Council, the plan is for the shark observation tower to be built after the surf season in April 2017. This is to minimise construction disturbance to the lifesavers during the peak life guard season.
Port Stephens Council received $34,100 to assist in the construction of the tower. The grant was part of the New South Wales Government’s Shark Management Bather Protection Program.
One Mile Beach is among a list of beaches that received priority funding.
