I wonder how many locals are still with us and remember the vibrancy and bustle of that area?
Today if you happen to walk down King Street there is a sign for all to see that due to the 1955 flood, businesses relocated to higher ground in William Street.
I recall that there have been plans by Port Stephens Council to rebirth King Street utilising its history but more importantly its location to the beautiful Hunter River.
Not far from King Street is the historic Junction Inn Hotel, located and renovated to take in the river and Millers Forest views.
Having lived in Raymond Terrace since 1960 I well recall many businesses still operating in King Street and, for a brief time, I was a coxen in one of the sculls for the Newcastle University Rowing Club.
So it was a pleasure to read of the plans for that grand old building [Examiner, March 16].
I do hope that Port Stephens Council has the vision and progressive thinking to cooperate with the new owners to achieve excellent visual and commercial renovations.
Having been in business in Raymond Terrace now for more than 50 years I know that the commercial area is like many similar towns – it has many long-term empty buildings, some very long term.
So while there seem to be plans to rebirth King Street, which is very welcome, what is to be done with William Street?
Can existing zoning allow conversion to residential living, for example, so over time you fill the empty buildings and create a vibrant town centre?
Yes, people own these properties so cooperation and vision is needed from them as well as a definitive long-term strategy from council.
Just look at the Maitland CBD and it’s recent revitalisation.
This shows what can be achieved.
But doing nothing will mean nothing will change.
