Nelson Bay sailor Clare Pearson will crew on two Port Stephens boats during this year’s regatta, which she said she is “excited” for.
Pearson will take part in a pre-regatta feeder race between Newcastle and the Port on Rumbo, owned by the Holbert family (of Holbert’s Oysters).
For the first three days of the regatta, Pearson will crew for Cipriani in the Commodores Cup. She will jump back on Rumbo for the performance racing series during the final three days.
Since her first Sail Port Stephens in 2015 Pearson, a member of Port Stephens Yacht Club, has upped her participation in the event. This year she is sailing the entire regatta.
“I have a passion for sailing,” she said. “This helps me build up contacts and experience. It feels good to be part of the local event.”
About six Port Stephens boats will race in the regatta, which will be held in the waters off the Bay between April 3-9. The 10th anniversary regatta is anticipated to attract its largest fleet yet, and strongest turn out of yachtswomen.
In addition to the regatta staple races, the Australian Sport Boat Association’s national titles and the Super 12’s NSW state titles will be held during Sail Port Stephens.
The Junior One-Sail Regatta will be held April 11-12.
