Nelson Bay Golf Club president Peter Power said it was “devastating” to see the club’s 15th green torn up, which was caused by two trail bike riders last Thursday.
“The greens are worth upwards of $100,000,” Mr Power said.
“We’ve managed to patch the damage up but this affect people’s recreation.
“I don't know what they get out of doing something like this.”
A man walking the course about 5pm on May 18 saw two motorbikes come off a fire trail at the back of the golf club and race up the 15th fairway.
The man took a photo of the pair riding in the distance.
The riders, their identities hidden by helmets and riding equipment, stopped at the 15th green and, with the bike tyres, tore up the grass.
Because the greens were damp from rain they were damaged quickly, Mr Power said.
“Really, it’s devastating,” he said.
“At this time of year the course is at its best.
“We’ve had our skilled greens staff patching it up.
“They put a temporary green in on Saturday, but it affected play.
“We’re hoping to have it back in play by Tuesday.”
Mr Power said a report about the vandalism has been made to Port Stephens police and the photos taken of the riders, and damage to the green, shared with them.
He encouraged anyone with information about the riders to contact police.
Phone Port Stephens police on 4983 7599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
