The dawn raid was the closing stanza of war games, part of Exercise Diamond Storm, that involved missions out of Amberley, Tindal, Katherine and Williamtown.
Friday’s dawn strike at Williamtown was the final exercise in the RAAF’s inaugural air warfare instructor course.
Fighters were scrambled at 6am to simulate protection of the Williamtown base.
Twenty-one personnel graduated from the five month program, including six crews from the Classic Hornet and six crews on the Super Hornet.
“It has been an intensive course, not just from the flying side but also in terms of academics,” Air Commodore Joe Iervasi said.
“It’s safe to say they’ve passed, absolutely.
“The graduates will take part in a graduation ceremony on [Saturday] night before they enjoy some downtime and take up pivotal roles as tacticians and mentors.”
