The association, which raises funds to help people and groups in the area, hosted a charity bowls day at Nelson Bay Golf Club in July to help Dylan Eyrich, 12.
Dylan has nodular heterotopia – the wiring in his brain is back to front and “won’t let him do anything” his mother, Kasie Sargeant, said.
Ms Sargeant has to lift Dylan in and out of the car, which due to his growing size, is becoming more difficult.
The association held the bowls day to raise funds to buy the family a newer vehicle that can be fitted with a lift for Dylan’s wheelchair.
“Sporting Hope was successful, with the help of the community, in raising enough to purchase a suitable vehicle for Dylan,” association member Peter Sherriff said.
“Over 200 people turned out at Nelson Bay Bowling Club for a very successful day of bowling and fund-raising.”
Entertainment was provided by rugby league greats Leo Toohey and John "Bomber" Peard on the day.
Cash donations were received from Westpac Bank Nelson Bay ($500), Salamander Recycling Centre ($2000), Soldiers Point Lions, Nelson Bay Bowling Club ($2000), Salamander Shores golf and fishing clubs ($2000), Ryan Palmer and family ($2000), Westrac employees and Nelson Bay Junior Rugby Union.
